Jamie and I went to Ely Nevada to rock hound garnets. Great fun place in the middle of Nevada.
Ely, Nevada, is a historic town tucked in to the heart of the Great Basin, offering travelers a unique combination of natural beauty, rich history, and small-town warmth. For those seeking an adventurous yet relaxing getaway, a visit to Ely and nearby Garnet Hill is a perfect option.
Garnet Hill, located just a short drive from Ely, is a renowned spot for rockhounds and adventure seekers. It was easy for us to get to, even in our little Prius. We’ve forced that poor car to be an off roader. Garnet Hill is one of the few places in the U.S. where you can hunt for garnets that are naturally embedded in the surrounding volcanic rock. Whether you’re a seasoned rock collector or a curious traveler, Garnet Hill provides a one-of-a-kind experience. With panoramic views of the surrounding desert and mountains, the area is perfect for a day of exploration, photography, and nature appreciation. And every one that we encountered up there was super friendly.
After a day of adventuring in Garnet Hill, there’s no better place to unwind than the Prospector Hotel in Ely.
